Huh, it's almost been a year of Ipsy bags for me now. I'm still enjoying it, though I'm eyeing a potential change with Birchbox releasing to Canada soon. Ipsy still does more makeup, though.

October's bag was a cute blue bag with puffed square patches, similar to the best Ipsy bag (the black one that I use for my DS). Haven't found a use for it yet, but I will.

Here's what I got:

Ayres - Patagonia Body Butter: This is a serviceable moisterizer, but it's a bit too scented for comfort. It'll be relegated to feet and legs, I think.

H2O+ - Face Oasis Hydrating Treatment: Is it weird that I'm happy with this one because the container is cute? The product is a gel that you smear on your face after showering as a moisterizer. I actually like it a bit better than moisterizers for that purpose (mostly I just let myself be dry, though... if I wasn't cool with that, I probably wouldn't use bar soap on my face), so it'll probably get some winter use.

Jesse's Girl - Mineralized Baked Shadow Powder in "Ocean Breeze": It's blue, it's substantial, it's well packed and pretty. Applied with good colour and not much fallout, and I was so pleased not to get another skin-colour eyeshadow. Thumbs up.

Skyn Iceland - Mini Glacial Cleansing Cloths: Uh. These are 10 little wet nap things that are sort of soapy and for your face. They take off makeup pretty well, so I did use one when we had a blackout and I didn't want to fuss trying to get mascara off my eyes by candlelight. That said, the idea that you would use these away from a bathroom is goofy - there is a definite sticky residue from the soap after application. Also, if you let it dry on you without rinsing, it feels weirdly like burning (no ill effects, though, so I think it's just the "cooling" sensation wearing off uncomfortably).

Starlooks - Lip Gloss in "Guilty Pleasure": This lip gloss is ridiculously sticky. It came out of the tube looking like melted chewing gum, and I gamely tried to apply it anyway, but it wasn't anything I want to do again. Somewhat vanilla scented. Boring pink colour. Remained sticky and made me feel like a middle-schooler.

So, not the best bag, but mostly useable. I also spent my Ipsy points on something that I should receive in November; this is my first time redeeming for something, since Ipsy is now doing lower point-value rewards (so it's not impossible for people who don't have referrals).
miko: Photo of me by the river (Default)
Yeah, I thought I'd do pictures for these and I never did, so here's the brief written description of what I got from Ipsy from the last couple months. The internet has been really down on the bags lately, but I think it's just the bloggers feeding off each other and making it seem worse than it is - I've actually been quite happy with what I received.

August

The bag was a pencil case esque one that felt like an inflatable pool toy and was white with orange spots. I haven't found a use for it yet.

Dr. Brandt - Pores No More Pore Refiner: This product does work to make your pores less visible. It feels a bit siliconey on. I don't really have a purpose for it, but it worked as advertised and it amused me for the 2 minutes I played with it.

Urban Decay - Perversion Mascara: This is the best mascara I have ever used. Okay, so I've only used a couple types of mascara, but this one is way nicer - the brush is well-bristled so my lashes don't end up all stuck together, and it only takes a brief swipe to get the effect that I hope for. It wasn't clumpy and doesn't look unnatural. It did have a bit of a smudging problem, though, where my eyelashes tend to touch my face.

J. Cat Beauty - Flying Solo Eye Shadow: This was sent to me in another meaningless skin colour, so all I could tell was that it was a bit shimmery. Meh. "Natural" is not something I look for in eyeshadows, because what the hell, if I'm going to take the time to smear powder on my eyelids I think it should look different than normal.

Jersey Shore Sun - Mongongo Lip Conditioner: It's lip balm, it works fine. I now will not need to buy another chapstick this winter, so that's nice.

Klorane - Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk: WHAT. This is actually the best thing in the bag... I didn't have high hopes since T didn't care for the dry shampoo she tried, but oh my god. This has saved me on a number of mornings when I woke up and realized my hair looked awful, but couldn't deal with the idea of having wet hair all day from morning shower. Spraying this at my head is frightening, but it makes my greasy roots look so much better. It's hilariously gray when you spray it on, but after I tousle it into my hair it looks just fine. Unlike T, I found it also decreased my itchy-scalp-itis, so bonus.

September

The bag was a shiny gray square one with four studs along the top. It is okay and will be used for something.

Crown Brush - Infinity Shadow/Crease Duet Brush: <3 This was the winner of the September bag. I was always sad that I didn't get brushes when they were an option, so I was extremely pleased with this. I've mostly been using the shadow side of it... I find the crease brush a little too solid, and I prefer to use even smaller brushes if I'm doing some edging. But yeah, a bigger shadow brush was exactly what I needed and I'm pleased to not have to buy my own.

Hikari - Lipstick: This brand is packaged exactly like Be a Bombshell. I am betting they are the same products from the same factory in China. This lipstick looked like a somewhat dark red in the tube, but applied to being a brighter shade of matte red-pink... I feel like it looks weird on me, but I haven't tried it more than once yet. The strangest part, though, was that it's a super dry lipstick... powdery feeling and really pulls on the lips when you try to apply it. Not what I'd look for in a lipstick.

NYX - Hot Singles Eye Shadow: Geez, another skin coloured eyeshadow. This time there were tons of other options too, but I continue on my boring beige streak. The quality of the eyeshadow was fine, but as usual, I could barely see it other than shine.

Pacifica - Natural Water-Proof Eye Pencil: I thought I would hate this like all the other eye pencils, but I don't. This is the best eye pencil I've received from Ipsy - it's soft enough that it's actually possible to apply to my eye, and the fact that I received a brown-ish colour matches very nicely to me. Good on you, brand, you're not bad.

Briogeo - Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask: It smells okay, but left my hair feeling a bit greasy when I did a quick test on the ends. I'm a bit burned out on hair masks, since we all know they can't really repair anything... just coat it for a while.

[Note: Okay, this is super late and without pictures - I took some, but I've just been busy / unmotivated with regard to posting anything. But I want to write something about July's products, and the text of this was already written, so here goes.]

This month's Ipsy brought me my first damaged/contaminated product! A few months ago, this happened with a lip gloss, but I received one that was fine... this time, though, I definitely got one of the bad ones. Ipsy responded to my email and told me they'd send out another product in its place - but then they sent me the same product again, and I couldn't bring myself to trust it, so that was a bit of a stupid resolution.

Other than that, things continue about as usual. The bag this month is from some designer (well, the pattern on it), and it's actually not bad. I expected to hate it, but the material doesn't feel awful and I'm actually using it to corral some things in my purse. If you're getting these and wondering what to do with them, I highly recommend it as a way to tuck away spare pads, bandaids, hair things, etc... I was always losing, crushing or just dirtying these things in my purse before, so this is way better and also make it easy to switch bags.

Here's what I got this month:

NYX - Butter gloss in "Crème Brulee" ($5, 6.5 g)

Everyone received this lip gloss in one of three colours - the one I got is very neutral. It's got a doe foot applicator and smells like vanilla. The smell isn't as noticeable once it's on. The description of butter gloss disturbs me as I feel it on my lips... who in the world would want to smear butter on their lips? Now I can't un-feel it. It's quite a sticky lip gloss when you put it on - despite the claim that it's "never sticky" from NYX.

Either the colour is very sheer or it's too close to my lip colour to be notable. It slightly lightens them, but anywhere that the product gathers looks like... you know when your lips have a raised bit of dead skin - not dry, just raised, like when your lips were stuck together too long? Yeah, kinda like that. Ick. It's glossy, but really not what I'd look for in a lip product.

The company also suggests layering it, but I can't imagine why I would want to make one of my lipsticks less attractive or pleasant feeling.

OFRA - Universal Eyebrow Pencil (0.4 g, $13)

I realize I am not the target audience of this product, since the only reason I would want to make my eyebrows more solid would be for a groucho Marx costume.

This feels like rubbing a soft pastel (my brain said "greasepaint") into my eyebrow. Perhaps I don't know how to apply it, but it gummed up my eyebrows something fierce and felt really weird. The colour seemed fine (lighter than my eyebrow, but coherent underneath it), and the pencil itself draws on my hand pleasantly and is soft and pigmented, but...

In this case, I would have preferred one of the alternates.

Alternatives:
Nicka K New York - Shimmer Eyeliner in "Blue" or "Green"
Jesse's Girl - Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner

Be a Bombshell - Lash Out Mascara ($15, 9 g)

Oh dear, here's the disaster product. I popped this open and immediately recoiled from the smell - acrid, like burning rubber, and strong enough to make your eyes sting even at a reasonable arm's length. I obviously did not try applying this to myself.
It's clear in retrospect that I would have preferred something I could use, but, looking at the list of alternates, the mascara really was the best choice for me. None of the rest are nearly as interesting - if the product hadn't had this problem, I would have been happy to try it.

Alternatives:
Ole Henriksen - Truth To Go Cleansing Wipes
Skinn - Olive & Enzyme Cleanser
Dermadoctor - DD Cream
Laneige - BB Cushion
clarisea - sea salt solutions face rapid detox charcoal exfoliant
MDSOLARSCIENCES - Mineral Tinted Crème Broad Spectrum SPF 30 UVA-UVB Sunscreen
Essence of Beauty - Wind Kissed perfume spray

Realtree - for Her [perfume] ($7, 0.34 oz)

Hey, do you know what the Realtree brand is? I didn't, but man... nothing says "try this perfume" like a website filled with dead animals (http://www.realtree.com/). It's a camouflage brand that apparently also wants to sell you perfume.

But hey - if your sample can't be useful, it should at least be amusing, right? So props for being the weirdest brand/product combination I've seen yet.

I don't like the smell of this perfume at all. It brings nothing to mind except that it smells like a children's perfume - it flashed me back to storing smelly toys in plastic milk bags to keep them from driving us all nuts. Good on Realtree for sending these out in tiny sealed ziploc bags, given that!

Same alternates list as above - these were "two of" options.

Alternatives:
Ole Henriksen - Truth To Go Cleansing Wipes
Skinn - Olive & Enzyme Cleanser
Dermadoctor - DD Cream
Laneige - BB Cushion
clarisea - sea salt solutions face rapid detox charcoal exfoliant
MDSOLARSCIENCES - Mineral Tinted Crème Broad Spectrum SPF 30 UVA-UVB Sunscreen
Essence of Beauty - Wind Kissed perfume spray

Marc Anthony - Dream Waves Beach Spray, ($3, 45 mL)

First things first, I looked up the video of what I was supposed to do with this product... and it is creepy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhEZat-xVQY

Stop... saying... sexy. Also, the look at the end of it is largely just disheveled to my eye, so I didn't have great expectations for it.

So, basic application, spray it on hair and then heat and scrunch to get waves. After attempting to use this product, I think it's not really useful for someone with long, unlayered hair. It does actually curl up the ends rather amusingly, but only the bottom 10 inches or so, which looks weirdly inconsistent on me. Sorry I didn't take pictures, but I found the texture unpleasantly like having horribly messy hair and had to brush it out. It gummed up my brush with white residue too, bleah.

It will give you volume by way of having slightly sticky product and it will make your hair smell somewhat of coconut. If you're more effective with a hairdryer and have shorter, layered hair, you may get some amusing curls... or you may get a scruffy mess, per the video.

I'm may give it another shot with curlers or something, but mostly it's a novelty for me.

Alternatives:
Dove - Pure Care Dry Oil Shampoo
Carol’s Daughter - Sacred Tiare Styling Cream

Summary:

- Date received: 2014-06-12
- Cost: $14.95 + conversion
- Value: $43 - except without the mascara, really only $28.

Well, the horrible Be a Bombshell mascara sort of crushed my enthusiasm to do anything about this bag. When I finally did try the rest, they were all pretty mediocre for me... nothing in there that I see getting a lot (or in some cases, any) use.
miko: Photo of me by the river (Default)
This month Ipsy was definitely more skin-care heavy than usual... not my thing, so unsurprisingly this bag wasn't really a hit for me. That said, within the scope of what could have been picked for me, the choices weren't awful. I'm just not really all that interested in "add this to your routine!" type products, because I'm never going to do that.

Here's what I got this month:

 photo IMG_1676_zps3e7479ab.jpg

The best thing about this month is the bag: It's a great little canvas bag with a sew-wide base (T said this was squaring corners? I don't know terms, I feel like home ec wasn't that effective for me). It's already in use as my new camera accessories bag. The Ipsy + leaf print is on the front and the back is blank.

Here's the products ... no pictures of me this month. )

Overall, not a great bag. I hope to see some actually pigmented makeup in the next bag, and no more exfoliators. But thumbs up on the bag itself, super cute and useful.

Oh dear... sneak peeks are happening for the May bag, and here I am having not posted anything about April! Life got busy (and I wanted to get my Diablo characters maxed again...), but I did take pictures and try everything at least once, so here we go!

The bag for this month is a dark purple, slightly taller than average and a thinner outer material. Nothing terribly notable; it has a record player image on it.

And here are the products! )

Overall, I was shockingly pleased with the perfume this month, but the rest was fairly bland. I'm sure I'll use the eyeliner and eyeshadow, though, and I didn't mind trying the exfoliator... the tinted lip balm is a bit of a bust, but may have some use combining with other products.

The bloom is somewhat off the rose for receiving these bags, which is sort of what I expected... I just don't love makeup that much, and it starts to pile up quickly since I don't wear it often. I'm enjoying the excuse to get better at using it, but once I hit a comfortable level of skill, I don't see myself continuing with this. For the moment, I've updated my profile to include more things to see about some variety, and we'll see how the next month or two goes.

A month flew by quickly - although I suppose it was the shortest month. I got my Ipsy bag at the start of this week and I've just had a chance to try things and take pictures. Here's the bag + contents this month:

Useable and amusing, can't complain. Four items this month (Ipsy says 4-5, but I gather it had been 5 for long enough that people were freaking out), but two full sized and three of reasonable utility.
miko: Photo of me by the river (Default)
Man, this month's bag looked awful coming out of the pouch. Thumbs up for the products filling the bag, but geez. I took some pictures, although perhaps M's "it looks like a scrotum" is all you need to know what the gut reaction to taking this one out was. As it happens, one of the products was in the mailer as well, because they really didn't fit!

 photo IMG_1296_zpsae6887e4.jpg

I think it was a combo issue of a slightly smaller bag and a number of products with additional paper packaging. The blush is also pretty large, as you'll see. The packed bag definitely made a mess of their normal insert, which looks even creepier than it would have normally because of the creasing:

 photo IMG_1341_zps851e0424.jpg
Thanks, Ipsy, I'll have nightmares about those lips for weeks.

For the bag itself, once I had everything out of it and flattened it a little, it's kinda cute. The curved top looks okay, although the bag corners act a little weird. T's recent post tells me that they are squared corners, and they work a little better when the bag's a bit filled, but not over stuffed. Oh, and the liner is a not terrible pink print, which is actually pretty cute combined with the plain front.

 photo IMG_1312_zpsb984eb98.jpg
I'll learn how much depth of field I have sooner or later...

I'm going to pretend the odd shaping of the bag was thematic, since half the products are also in oddly shaped packaging.

This post is really long, buyer beware )

This bag was fun! All things I was willing and able to try, and more than one that fits a niche I'd been looking to fill.
miko: Photo of me by the river (Default)
The Ipsy community, such as it is, can be so weird. The past two months I've seen people complaining about always getting red lipsticks and purple eyeshadows, and how they want different products and different brands... and then this month, they come out with something quite different and everyone complains that they signed up for makeup, and how could Ipsy do this to them.

People are the worst.

Anyway. From the selection it showed on the website, I figured I'd be okay with this bag - I was getting the two relevant makeup products, two hair and skin products that were likely usable and one random thing. I did find I was a little disappointed in the product sizes when I got it - as you'll see in the pictures, the samples are almost all tiny. It's probably for the best in the sense that I don't usually use things up, but it definitely felt less exciting than the previous bags for that reason.

The bag itself is okay. It smells and feels like a 90s waterproof jacket, but I don't really mind since it makes it feel like a more functional bag: I'm pretty sure I could get it wet or get products on it and still clean it and use it, unlike the cloth bags. It's pretty much a small toiletries bag. Amusingly, because so many people online are complaining bitterly about it ("I had to throw it out, it smelled so bad" type stuff), I actually like it more. It's just a plastic smell, after all, not something gross like perfume.

Here's what I got this month:

Ipsy bag and products 2014-01

On to the specifics )

The tinyness of the sample sizes made the value lower in this, except that we all know makeup prices are goofy anyway (eg, that tiny tinted lip balm being $20... what), so the other bags were just overvalued. It did feel like less of a bag because of the little samples, but four of the five products are useable, so it's actually better that previous bags from that standpoint.

I don't know. I think this was possibly a bit more Birchbox in style (T can confirm or deny), which isn't really what I wanted from Ipsy, but I don't feel particularly put out that they sometimes do a bag like this as well... I just also don't feel all that excited about it. I did get one truly tragic product, so at least that makes for a fun review.

And the tiny samples meant I could try my makeshift light box! I'll learn to use this camera yet.

This month's Ipsy bag has arrived! Up front, I'm going to say: after two months, I'm happily confident that I picked the right subscription service for me. I've been having overnight insomnia and reading a lot of blogs, and Ipsy is the closest to what I want - Makeup, not general products (moisterizers, peels, etc are not of interest to me), and at a reasonable price (even if I think the retail value of makeup is horrifically overpriced) for the level of entertainment.

Seeing my "Glam Room" (aka, Ipsy's website tells you what you're getting when they ship the bag), I was initially concerned that I'd be disappointed in getting the fragrance and false lashes options... but upon consideration, I really wasn't. Pre trying anything, I was still happy at the randomness and pleased to get a fragrance set where I can compare the men's and women's equivalent. No idea if I'll be willing to attempt false eyelashes (hardly seems worth it), but maybe I'll want them for costume some day.

Here's the overall shot of what I got this month:

December 2013 Ipsy bag with products

The bag itself is worlds better than last month's. If I didn't already have a case for my 3DS, it might have been a contender (although it's a little tall, and I'd be bothered by the unsquare top left corner). The little diamonds are actually puffy/squishy, which amuses me to no end and makes it somewhat more protective. The zipper tag says Ipsy, as well.

This is a follow-up post to my November Ipsy review. It's now about a month later, and I wanted to note a few more things about the products that I discovered.

Oh, and I finally checked the final price after conversion: CAD$16.02

Winter thoughts: Makeup is still stupid when you have to wrap a scarf around your face before you can leave the house. Like how hairstyling is worthless if I'm about to pull on a fluffy hat and face the cold.

The products:

em michelle phan - lip gallery creamy color sheer lipstick in "one true kiss"

Still a bad lipstick. I've worn it once to work and it had no value - the smell didn't choke me as much when I applied and immediately went outside, but basically it's a product that just feels like you're wearing lipstick but doesn't actually look like anything. Utterly meh, I guess unless you for some reason lack confidence when you're not aware that you have stuff on your face. I may actually trash this if I can't find someone else who can use it.

Be a Bombshell - Lip Crayon in "hot damn"

It's growing on me! I thought it was a bit orange and a bit bright, but upon daytime review as I got ready in the morning, it best matched the pink in a skirt I had, not the orange flowered dress I thought it would. I also wore it to work without feeling self conscious and had about the same number of "makeup! you look great!" comments as I get with my darker lipstick.

Nailtini - Straight Up Color Nail Lacquer in "Caviar Cocktail"

Yup, it's better than my old Streetwear gunmetal polish. Lasted well, other than the run in with my clarinet (I got snagged under a key, not quite sure how) and then deciding to work on chainmail. Came off well with remover, no staining.

Pixi Beauty - Bronzer in "Subtly Suntouched"

Is it weird that this has grown on me even though I still don't think it makes a visual difference? I think I just like the concept of contouring, because it reminds me of digital painting. Add depth by making high- and low-lights!

I also tried it as a bit of a eyeshadow the other day and was pretty surprised at the results - applied with a damp brush (so it wouldn't just fly away), the shimmer is much more noticeable and it actually becomes a highlighter. It was a nice enough effect, though it didn't last particularly well... probably not helped by my being terribly sick and constantly rubbing my congested face. Ick.

Starlooks - Gem Eye Pencil in "Amethyst"

I tried to use this very lightly with another eyeshadow look and didn't like it at all. So silver, so bright, so hard to get off my face! Sparkles everywhere, really not subtle. I'm thinking this one really isn't for me.

BH Cosmetics - Galaxy Chic Baked Eyeshadow Sample in "Eclipse"

I put this on over top of a Physician's Formula purple eyeliner that I was playing with and I quite liked the result! I will probably use those in conjunction again, and I still think this is a good eyeshadow.

Forewarned is forearmed: This post is long and picture heavy.

Photo of the Novembber 2013 Ipsy bag with the six contained products in front of it.

Do you want a ton of information about a beauty box subscription? Sure you do.

I'm not much for makeup, really, and don't bother with it the majority of the time. I like blindboxed things, though: as a kid, I quite liked the Kinder Surprise toys, and I followed up with D&D minis in later years, but my options to get that kick are badly limited - minis got very expensive for fewer mysteries in the box; Kinder Surprise toys are terrible these days (you don't even build anything... it's usually just a hunk of plastic); and there's only space for so many plastic ponies on my desks.

Links to subscription boxes showed up on my internet doorstop, though, and triggered that same interest in me. I looked at subscription boxes that seemed like they would be targeted toward my interest (geeky things, typically), but all I could think when I saw what had come in them was "geez, that is a pile of useless crap." Most of those boxes are also more expensive and less random, which is a disappointment for my blindbox cravings. I want something with a limited cost that I will be amused by even if I don't get anything notable.

So here we are: makeup. I kind of like makeup, but in a novelty sense - I don't feel like I need it, so most of my minimal collection was bought for costume purposes, and only used a few times. That makes buying anything other than the cheapest makeup feel silly, and made Ipsy a solid choice for me: cheap, ships to Canada, largely random and heavily makeup products. That last one is in comparison to other similar boxes... I have even less interest in "beauty products" than makeup, because their absurd claims drive me nuts. At least makeup typically does the core thing it suggests: puts colours on your face.

With that context, here we go:

Onward! )

Summary:

- Date received: 2013-11-12
- Cost: $14.95 + conversion = $16.02
- List value in box: $64 (with some estimating). Note that Ipsy indicates a $96 dollar value on their splash page; probably based on whatever the most expensive products you could receive were.
- Reality: I can't imagine paying the prices listed, and I feel like makeup is probably another industry where you might as well wait for sales because everything's overpriced at list. That said, I feel like I got my money's worth of entertainment out of this box.
- "Receive one of X products" worked well for me. Profile or luck, I'm happy. Not every product was a hit, but that's to be expected.
- I'm still pretty hilariously bad at makeup, and the lighting in my house is terrible.
